Unfortunately, it's far too common for great independent businesses to have no clear ownership succession plan.

In many cases, if the founder/owner were hit by the proverbial bus tomorrow, the company's mission, culture, and very existence could be in jeopardy.

Stronghold Ownership exists to help founders and business owners navigate the confusing and challenging road of trying to figure out the right values-aligned succession strategy for their company, while also achieving their own personal financial and lifestyle goals.

  • Specifically, we specialize in alternative ownership structures such as Perpetual Purpose Trusts, Employee Centered Trusts (AKA Employee Ownership Trusts), Direct Employee Ownership, Worker Cooperatives, and Employee Stock Ownership Programs (ESOPs). 

    While some companies come to us with no clear plan, others, like Natural Investments (pictured above), come to us with a very specific goal in mind. In their case, they wanted a succession plan that enabled us to exit the owners while maintaining company autonomy and culture, enabling democratically-elected stewardship, supporting diverse racial and gender leadership, and implementing profit-sharing, all while not burdening stakeholders with debt as they oversee the strategic direction of the company. We successfully helped them design and implement a structure that achieved all of these goals.

Why the Name Stronghold?

The name “Stronghold” is inspired by the book Stronghold: One Man's Quest to Save the World's Wild Salmon by Tucker Malarkey.

The book’s protagonist is Guido Rahr, who is the president/CEO of The Wild Salmon Center, which has been a leader in the development and implementation of “the stronghold strategy.”

We think of our clients as “Stronghold Companies” and see great parallels between the stronghold strategy in salmon conservation and our work in business ownership design.
